Guitar Jealousy

E@L unpacks his new guitar in Singapore and logs on for some tabs.

In one of the grossest errors of his lifetime he picks up a coupla links at YouTube to Tommy Emmanual playing a few songs...

That's it. The guitar's not going back into the case until E@L can play all these tunes just as well... Or until tomorrow's flight to Bangkok, whichever comes first.

the expression "trying a bit too hard" comes to mind. I can't deny his talent but it's a bit like watching spinal tap unplugged. I haven't laughed as much for ages. Having said that I would pay money to see you do this live. I have a model of stonehenge you can borrow btw you could emerge from a pod...in Dobly

Dobly?

Whatever HAPPENED to Dolby Noise Reduction btw?

Tommy was from a family of travelling circus guitar performers. They used to do this sort of stuff riding on the backs of elephants and snow leopards. While the technical virtuosity on display in the above clips provides more than enough elephant shit to smother the faces of most/all wannabe guitar gods in the world, like moi, yet is even more impressive in the original context, when he had his head in a lion's mouth while riding a spike-wheeled motorcylce backwards through a giant fiery ring, in contrapuntal 3/4 rhythm.

The reason it looks a try-hard-ish is because if you try it, it's really hard.

hmm alright then. But I'm still chuckling about the bit in the first clip where he stops actually playing and starts pulling out random implements to give his "axe" some Jeff Beck style acoustic abuse.

I'd absolutely love to see him doing this on the back of a snow leopard or maybe even a Singapore taxi driver...

Dobly went out I guess when they realised a CD had a greater dynamic range than the average bat. It's a totally wicked analogue thing innit. Just the fact we remember it damns us to oldfartdom. One day after we are gone there will be Hadiths about Dobly, I'm sure of it.

Can we expect to see a fatwah on digital stuff called by insurgent proponents of these fundamental and inherently superior analogue technologies?

But when you can no longer hear that 17kHz ring tone, does any of it really matter?

Semi-joking only about the circus performing stuff. The Emmanuel brothers (Tommy and Phil [no relation]) were home-taught child guitar prodigies who toured and performed around Australia from when Tommy was 6!

You can see from his varied finger-picking techniques - with plectrum and pinkie stabilizing the hand resting on the guard that he has not been classically or even "rock" trained.

The unique picking style contributes to the uniqueness of his sound. No-one else can do it becasue most don't play that way.

A total entertainer all through his life, his use of the slap-stuff shows him trying to be different and well, entertaining as the paying public may not understand or appreciate the quality of the actual guitar bits, but they'd go home remembering that!

Alright I'll stop taking the piss he is awfully clever have to admit.

There is only one Dobly but Dobly A, B type is proof of the Great Satan!
