Naive Immigration Question

General Rule for assimilation and integration for immigrants: Learn The Language Of Your New Country.

So why is it when people from foreign countries emigrate to AMERICA and AUSTRALIA, they have to learn ENGLISH, which is the language of the people of ENGLAND?

Isn't there some logical flaw there?

Hey, when the ENGLISH who were the second wave of immigrants rather ungratefully and violently usurped these lands from their traditional inhabitants and rightful owners, THEY didn't learn the local language(s). They just killed most everybody who did speak it. And yet here are the English-speaking usurpers trying to impose this rule on the newcomers to their adopted lands like it was An Eternal Verity?

What the fuck's with you, hypocrites?

Why learn English, the immigrants ask? You're still gonna despise us.

Yeah, it's not exactly a very charming thing to do - coming to a foreign country slaughtering half its population then forcing them assimilate.

I'm also curious as to why when some people visit a non-English speaking country, they talk to the locals loudly as if they are deaf and then wonder why they locals don't speak or understand English.....

It depends if you elect to kick or receive.........If one is on the winning end, one gets to pick the language to be spoken. Which is why French is declining every day and English is on the ascendency.

Come to America where you can be insulted in Spanish by ATM's every day and you will see why folks get so fired up about immigration............

Mexico City is where the Latinos should be protesting, not Los Angeles. If Mexico got off its ass and built something of the country, people would not sneak across the border.......

Skip, I was expecting your reply from the moment I started conceiving the post!

My point, and OK it's not my strongest argument ever, it is like coming to Philippines and being forced to speak Spanish. Going to Noumea or Tahiti and having to speak French.

Actual point is, we were all immigrants once, the language we spoke then was the language we brought with us.

Jews currently speak Middle Ages German (Yiddish) as that is the language they came out of Hamburg, etc... with when they moved into Russia during the pogroms of the post Black Death era. It joined them, held together them as a community. You think they should have learned Middle Ages Russian instead? Czar Peter The Great didn't force them.

You think Americans can go back some 1950's WASP Pleasantville dreamtime just because it was nice when you were all growing up? Too late, senor.

Vaya con dios.

Ask me again why I want to move to Singapore.............

I had to learn Japanese...then again, I wanted to get laid so it was in my best interest to do so. Come to think of it, that's the best reason to learn another language, to get laid by a native speaker.........

Guess I'll need to learn Bahsra and Tagalog eh?

If you go to FFoW, you'll need those staples Thai and Lao, plus Russian,Spanish and Portugese for the "white wimmen" and of course Vietnamese for the late night discounts. Also a smattering of Mandarin wouldn't go astray. Your Japanese will only come in useful when are trying to pick up the tourists.

Why come to Singapore? 66.6% voted for PAP- the Centile of The Beast!

Apart from that you just need the right attitude. Obviously I don't have it. Sigh.

Lisa, I've noticed when tourists shout and repeat themsleves to the locals, they always emphasize the wrong words, the non-crucial part of the sentence anyway.

e.g. "I wanna gedder hillenotel - DO YOU KNOW THE WAY?"
