Non-Bimbotic

A quite non-bimbotic post from a rather despondent Molly Meek yesterday in response to the MM's desperate plea request for talented people not to leave Singapore...

On people who can and want to leave, MM Lee has this to say:

"You are here, you are getting this education, you are getting these opportunities that make you mobile, that make you desirable because this mass of people [the people who are doing all the dirty work but are unable to leave] had discipline, (were) hardworking, provided the stability, the base on which you mounted your career. Can you in good conscience say, 'Goodbye! Thank you very much'?'" (Link)

Well, that would have sounded very nice if not for the fact that Molly wants to people might want to retort:

"You are in office because this mass of people voted you in. Can you in good conscience say, 'I want a million-dollar salary! Thank you very much'? Can you in good conscience say, 'I'm not going to help you if you are poor because I don't want you to develop a crutch mentality'?"

It is very frustrating for me in Singapore as foriegn talent not to feel sorry for the talented Singaporean who just needs to voice his or her opinion, who just wants to stretch to the limit, who wants to escape such blatant hypocrisy, who just wants to feel free from overbearing obligation and omnipresent judgement from these same hypocrites. Young people who want to grow up the way I grew up in Australia, proud, independant and free (even if dirt poor).

Maybe those earlier generations who couldn't leave worked as hard as they did in the hope that their children would one day be able make decisions on their own, they could leave if they wanted to, they could make a choice about their political affiliations without feeling fear and paranoia, they could ignore the dubious advice of reactionary old men...

Father and Son.

Father
Its not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy.
Youre still young, thats your fault,
Theres so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but Im happy.

I was once like you are now, and I know that its not easy,
To be calm when youve found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything youve got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

Son
How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
Its always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now theres a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

Father
Its not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
Youre still young, thats your fault,
Theres so much you have to go through.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but Im happy.
(Son-- away away away, I know I have to
Make this decision alone - no)

Son
All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
Its hard, but its harder to ignore it.
If they were right, Id agree, but its them you know not me.
Now theres a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
(Father-- stay stay stay, why must you go and
Make this decision alone? )

Molly: "I want to leave Singapore because I'm not in a position to repay the masses who have toiled for the success of the country. I need to leave because, even if I could do something for these people, there is yet another group of people who have left me feeling so alienated and so stifled that I have no energy to do anything. Other than to blog in futility. Perhaps I need to leave to preserve te remnants of my conscience before it's eaten or stamped by by the political Godzilla which consumes everything that gets in its way."

Still the same old story.

I feel proud, independent and free in Ozland*.

Also feel cold.

*Also because parental unit is eight hours away and am not staying with relatives.

Ah yes, the temperate climes. Winter: the price you pay.

The closer to the equator, the more fucked the politics, as a rule.
