Hua Hin Five-O, or Sentosa Five-O?

I'm out of Sin-city for the next six weeks or so (no, that is not an invitation to break in to my apartment and steal my bookshelves) which will make organization of my 50th birthday party a bit difficult. End of June, those of you who wish to start wrapping presents...

But it's a bit of a nightmare because I have friends here, in Hong Kong, Jersey, The Caymans and Australia to consider and it's going to be really hard quite an achievement to maximize satisfaction. Remember what I said in my last post about managing expectations...

At the moment I'm even thinking of splitting the whole thing into three smaller more or less self-organizing affairs.

1: I realise that many of my family members are too *****, too *****, too ***, too *** and too mulitphobic (and I love 'em to bits) to fly up here, so I'll have to go down to Melbourne for a family and close friends thing. Maybe we could do a Sunday Brunch in some fancy hotel, if they have them in the colonies.

This trip is a certainty. It's also Number 1 Son's 30th the week before, so we can do something together. In fact this is going to be easy, I'll get the son to organize it as a birthday present to me. (He doesn't know this yet.) And I'll pay for it as a birthday present to him.

2: Talking about certainty, I can't find out if the Hua Hin Jazz Festival is on again this year or not, but if it is, it will probably be the first week-end in June. This is too early to really be associated with my birthday, hell I could kick the bucket in the intervening 2 weeks and not actually make it to the big Five-O!

But it would be really cool place to be. There's no entry fee or tickets required, you just turn up, buy beers from the heavenly Heineken babes, grab some somtam salad and stretch out on the sand. It's right near the Sofitel and the Hilton hotels, but there heaps of villas along the beach front and around town to stay in, and you could just walk up at your leisure...

However as I am going to be away these next weeks, working in Bangkok and then Jakarta and followed by holidays in Switzerland and Austria, only a few luggage changing days at home in between, it might he hard to set-up the whole Hua-Hin trip thing.

*I* already have a flight booked as I had to use up some CX frequent flier points, but it was difficult to get seats for the presumed dates around the alleged festival.

But then again, he thinks, anyone who'd be coming would be fairly seasoned travellers so it would not require me doing much, not as it would be if my family (bless 'em) were to try and get there. My God, imagine that - getting them organized, to the airport, flying (mom has not been in a plane), no cigarettes for 9 hours, squeezing into economy class seats, getting through the chaotic cramped arrival foyer at Suvarnabhumi Airport to find a taxi-bus to take them Hua Hi - the 4 hours drive... Finding the Hua Hin villa or hotel... Panic all the way, recrimination, tears; and that's just the taxi-driver...

There'd be a movie/novel/TVseries in all that... So, no, I'll meet the family in Geelong and get them up to Melbourne somehow instead, hopefully less dramatically - we'll take the train if necessary!

With no family coming to Thailand, that will make this easier to organize too, I'll just tell the people to be in Hua Hin for the weekend of the Jazz Festal. They can organize their own transport and accommodation, and we'll all meet up for the official party drinks on the Friday night somewhere and we'll decide on other things on the fly for the week-end; things like golf, beer, sex, jazz and more golf. Mm, cute caddy in that link, eh? Maybe we could combine some of those activities, har har...

3: But what if the festival is NOT on this year? I just can't find anything on the web and I haven't heard back from the Sofitel yet. Maybe I should check an alternative venue here in Singapore.

What about booking out the Jacuzzi at KM8 on Saturday afternoon? Or the new place, Cafe Del Mar? I hear that the atmosphere is not so great there, that it's ambience a bit uncertain. Is it a Dress-Up Club or a Dress-Down Beach Bar?

The good thing about the Sentosa option is I could actually have the party ON my birthday, which is on a Saturday. Plus there is (slightly) more to do here - like shop. Again, freinds are seasoned travellers, they can get here by themselves...

It will require a little more setting up, but I hope to be in Singapore for most of April to do the leg-work. I said that about February too, but off I go on Sunday to miss the CNY holidays as they don't celebrate it in Thailand.

But another good thing is about having a party in Singapore, I could expect a couple more local bloggers to attend than might be able to get to Hua Hin... Mmm instead of Jazz, we could have Mega playing his Aussie anthems? I could even bring my guitar, do a David Brent!

Ah, I don't know. Might have to do all three of them...

Any suggestions??? Am I making too much of this? Should I delegate even more stuff?

I have finally taken the plunge and registered with weblog. This will enable me to make witty comments on your blog if and when I think of one. Isn't this exciting? Dick.

Sav: Am I a gemini? No, I'm a human.

Dick: can't wait for those w.c.

i had no idea you were so literal

Sav: it's my defining and most annoying characteristic, plus cleaning drink-glasses, plus being intolerant of mystic new-age (i.e. ancient) time-wasting total crap like astrology and anything in the self-help section of the bookstore... The best help for the self and guides for the trouble soul are usually in the classic novels section.

e@l, it doesn't matter where, it's the amount of booze that matters, and the mateys who're there.

ps. what's like turning 50? that seems like 2 decades away for me!

Posted by: The Ivy on Feb 15, 07 | 6:27 pm

T: you will only be forgiven when we see those Les photos...

Ivy: quality of the booze, quality of the mateys... What's it like? I don't know yet.

Duly noted in the miserable annals of time.

Dr Emilio Lizardo = Buckaroo Bonzai Across The 8th Dim.

Damn, I only watched it the other day, but only about 20 mins.

Note: the evil company was Yoyodyne! cf The Crying of Lot 49. (I am better on books than movies. Oops now we're goign to start gamesmanship on book quotes.)

Posted by: expat@large on Feb 16, 07 | 12:32 am

yes to both...but no to gamesmanship re book quotes.

re your note: tell me something i don't know...we've discussed pynchon, dearest *w*

Posted by: savannah on Feb 16, 07 | 3:09 am

Had to google the quote... hides face in shame.

& So you know EVERYTHING about Pynchon???

(I only know a few things about a few writers and a few movies, but if you drop these tidbits at the right moment - wow you can look smart! But if it's the wrong time or the wrong quote - wow can you look dumb!)

Posted by: expat@large on Feb 16, 07 | 12:09 pm

no worries, sugar, there is no shame in googling..and no, i don't know everything about pynchon...i knew THAT particular bit..and a few more, as well...(do you read my responses to your comments on my blog? she said ever so politely)
